Surrey: Hundreds object to plans for 24/7 gambling shop

Plans to turn a former bank into gambling premises which would be open 24 hours-a-day, seven days-a-week, has received opposition from local residents.

Astro Property (MK) Ltd said its application for an “adult gaming centre” at the site in Church Road, Ashford, Surrey, would add “vitality and viability” to the area.

Over 200 letters have been submitted objecting to the plans, with some questioning why the town needs another betting shop.

People against the proposals called them ‘morally wrong’ and ‘socially irresponsible’.

Others said the shop would “create more opportunity for poverty” and noted food banks are “frequently” used in Ashford. The are six in the area covered by Spelthorne Borough Council.

Spelthorne Borough Council planners have until 3 July to decide whether to approve or reject the application.

It was suggested the bank should be turned into a community hub for the elderly, a mental health café or a children’s play zone.

Those supporting the application said the gambling shop would “keep people out of trouble”, claiming it would add life to the town and bring in money.

There had only been three letters of support at the time of writing.

A spokesman for Astro Property said planning decisions are not determined by public referendum but by material decisions.

The building has four floors, including a basement. The top two floors are residential with the application seeking to change the use of the ground and basement floors.

The applicants said the site would employ up to eight people.
