According to a recent survey conducted by RVshare, shows 86% of Americans are planning to travel this summer, with a preference for domestic destinations over international ones. The survey reveals a strong inclination towards travel, with only 17% of respondents planning international trips. In contrast, a substantial 71% have decided against traveling abroad, highlighting a preference for exploring local landscapes and reducing travel complexities.

  • 46% of respondents are concerned about airline ticket prices.
  • 36% are wary of hotel costs.
  • 22% are cautious about car rental rates.

The Rise of RV Travel

RV travel is gaining significant traction, with 55% of respondents planning an RV trip within the next six months. This mode of travel offers a unique blend of flexibility and comfort, appealing to those who seek adventure without compromising on amenities. Key insights include:

  • 58% of RV travelers intend to drive the RV themselves.
  • 23% prefer having the RV delivered to their campground or destination.
  • National parks are the top choice for RV trips, followed by beach and lake destinations.

The allure of having “a home on wheels” is a primary factor, with 55% of respondents finding it the most appealing aspect of RV travel.

Tradition and Celebration Trips

RV travel is also becoming a favored option for annual tradition trips and unique celebrations.55% of respondents currently take an annual trip every year, and 76% are open to adopting an annual RV trip with family and friends as a new tradition. Celebrating milestones  are also largely popular reasons for travel, with 66% claiming they’d take a trip to celebrate a retirement, and 29% who would do the same for getting a promotion.

Road Trip Preferences

When it comes to the duration of road trips, preferences vary:

  • 34% favor trips lasting 7-10 days.
  • 28% prefer 5-6 day trips.
  • Longer journeys of 2-3 weeks or even a month are considered by 24% of respondents.

Reasons for Summer Travel

The primary motivations for summer travel include:

  • A need for relaxation and vacation (59%).
  • Exploring the great outdoors (59%).
  • Visiting family (35%) and friends (23%).

These insights highlight a strong desire to reconnect with nature and loved ones.

As summer unfolds, the travel landscape is shaped by affordability concerns, a preference for domestic travel, and the increasing popularity of RV adventures.
