Suspect crashes into business following chase, arrest report says

BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) – A suspect has been arrested after leading police on a pursuit in Baton Rouge that ended when he crashed into a business, according to an arrest report.

The suspect, Kaleb Jefferson, 18, is charged with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, flight from an officer, aggravated kidnapping, and multiple other things.

The chase happened just after 10 p.m. on Wednesday, November 27, the arrest report states.

An officer was patrolling in the area of Government Street and S. Eugene Street when Jefferson allegedly ran a red light, authorities said. They added that the officer attempted to pull Jefferson over, but he allegedly refused to stop and led police on a chase that latest for about five minutes.

According to the arrest report, Jefferson allegedly drove at a high rate of speed during the chase and also allegedly ignored multiple stop signs and red lights.

Authorities said that Jefferson was taken into custody after crashing into a business on S. 19th Street.

The arrest report states that officers searched the vehicle and discovered an American tactical AR15 in the back seat. Jefferson was questioned about the weapon and told officers that he did not know it was in the vehicle, according to the arrest report.

A passenger in the vehicle said he asked to exit the vehicle multiple times, but Jefferson refused those requests, authorities said. They added that the passenger said he was just looking for a ride to the store.

The owner of the vehicle involved in the chase told authorities that Jefferson was given keys to the vehicle to retrieve something out of it, the arrest report states. It adds that the owner said Jefferson was not given permission to drive the vehicle. The owner also stated that they did not own a firearm and did not know of a firearm being in the vehicle, according to the arrest report.

Jefferson was taken to the hospital and was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison after being treated and cleared by a doctor.
