Texas A&M legends Anjanette Kirkland and Andrea Williams inducted into the San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame

SAN ANTONIO, TX – Texas A&M legends Anjanette Kirkland and Andrea Williams were officially inducted into the San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame as members of the Class of 2024 at a ceremony at the Henry B. González Convention Center on Thursday.

Kirkland, from Holmes High School in San Antonio, lettered for the Texas A&M track & field team from 1993-97, while Williams, from Churchill High School, competed for the Aggies’ volleyball team from 1992-95 and the basketball team from 1993-94.

Kirkland, already a member of the Texas A&M Athletics Hall of Fame, the Southwest Conference Hall of Fame and the Texas Black Sports Hall of Fame, finished her track and field career as the most decorated female in Texas A&M history before going on to win a pair of world championships in her professional career. Competing for head coach Ted Nelson and hurdles coach Abe Brown, Kirkland was an eight-time All-America hurdler and won eight conference titles during her illustrious career, which included being named the Female Performer of the Year after sweeping the 100- and 400-meter hurdles at the inaugural Big 12 Outdoor Championships in 1997. Kirkland currently serves as the head track and field coach at Cypress Woods High School in the Houston area.

Williams, who was named to the SEC Legends Class of 2020, was the first Aggie to letter in volleyball and basketball in the same year and she also helped lead both teams to the NCAA Sweet 16 – Lynn Hickey’s basketball team in 1994 and Laurie Corbelli’s volleyball squad in 1995. After graduation, Williams entered into a successful career in athletics administration and currently serves as the Chief Experience Officer for the NBA’s Utah Jazz, where she leads all diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives within the organization. Before joining the Jazz, Williams served as the Chief Operating Officer for the College Football Playoff, as well as becoming the first Black woman to serve as commissioner of a Division I league at the Big Sky Conference, and serving 16 years with the Big Ten Conference.

Joining Kirkland and Williams in the San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2024 were former Converse Judson High School football coach Jim Rackley and the first Black football letterman at the University of Texas, Julius Whittier.
