Texas A&M provides multiple paths for cybersecurity industry jobs

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) – Cybersecurity is a rapidly changing industry that requires many different forms of management and understanding to combat the constant strains on safety.

John Sherman is the Dean of The Bush School of Government and Public Service. He says keeping up with the constant change is crucial.

“Cyber security is growing all across the world…It affects our daily life; it affects our economy and business and our national security. We’ve got to have women and men who are trained in this area, not only with hands-on keyboards and doing the technical things to protect our internet systems but also in policy.”

Texas A&M is focusing on cybersecurity in many ways. The Engineering and Computer Science school focuses on the technical aspects which is stuff like coding and programming.

The RELLIS Campus concentrates on research and testing and The Bush School focuses on the policy side such as government and laws.

“I’m very excited not only at Texas A&M Proper here but what’s going on for example at the RELLIS Campus.” Sherman shared. “They’re doing different things looking at electronic warfare, looking at 5G and NextG type of telecommunications. All of this to me is part and parcel of cyber and cyber security.”

According to the Texas state government, the cybersecurity industry contributes over $35 billion dollars to the state’s economy. It also provides well-paying jobs across the state with an average salary of $110,000 dollars a year.

Sherman says young people looking to get into the cybersecurity industry will have guaranteed employment. “Being able to have a school like Texas A&M with engineering, policy, arts, and sciences…cybersecurity is so important to everything we do here. We at The Bush School are excited to be a part of it.”
