Texas Association of Sports Officials Laredo basketball chapter looking to recruit referees

LAREDO, Tex. (KGNS) – Basketball fans interested in calling their own shot have a chance to become an official for Laredo basketball games.

Back in May, the Texas Association of Sports Officials approved the Laredo Basketball Officials Chapter, and now they are looking to recruit new basketball officials.

The local basketball officials chapter has about 30 officials right now, but they are looking to get 75 referees before the start of the basketball season.

Zabby Rincon, the Laredo Basketball Officials Chapter President, says this is an opportunity for young basketball fans who might want to make a career out of officiating.

”We are going to be providing all the material, all the education resources to all the members,” Rincon explains. “This is a good way for students, or any athlete, that [wants] to officiate. It’s a good opportunity to make extra money and at the same time stay healthy. It’s a lot of running.”

Rincon adds that those interested must be at least 16 years or older to become a referee.

For now, the chapter will be focusing on 12 middle schools in Laredo as well as neighboring communities such as Bruni and Hebbronville.
