play

Texas basketball beat Syracuse 70-66 and Saint Joseph’s 67-58 at last weekend’s UKG Legends Classic in Brooklyn, N.Y. The Longhorns return home Friday to host Delaware State (3-4), another low-major program to visit Austin this month that hopes to cash in on playing a Power Five program as well as a hearty nonconference playout.

Delaware State, of the Mid-Eastern Conference, has struggled against Division I programs, falling to Virginia Tech, Columbia, Providence and Mount St. Mary’s. The wins have come against small Pennsylvania-based universities like Cheyney, Gwynedd Mercy and Wilkes Barre.

Here’s what you need to know for the matchup:

Texas Longhorns: Some votes in latest poll

After capturing its first regular-season neutral-site multi-team event title in four years at the UKG Legends Classic, Texas received 43 votes in the latest USA Today coaches poll. That placed the Longhorns 27th among all the teams receiving votes.

Tre Johnson: Paces Longhorn stat leaders

With 21.2 points a game, Texas freshman guard Tre Johnson ranks second in the nation in scoring among all NCAA Division I freshmen, behind just Rutgers’ Dylan Harper at 22.5 points a game. Johnson also leads the SEC in points per game.

Senior forward Arthur Kaluma, a first-year Longhorn who transferred in from Kansas State, ranks in the top 10 in the SEC with team-highs in rebounding (7.3 a game) and field-goal percentage (57.4%) to go along with 14.7 points a game. Forward Kadin Shedrick ranks third in the SEC with 2.2 blocks a game.

Delaware State: Scrappy Hornets seek big upset

A member of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, Delaware State hasn’t had a winning season since the 2011-12 campaign. But the Hornets on Tuesday, they routed Penn State-Wilkes Barre 111-43 behind 19 points apiece from Kaseem Watson and Robert Smith.

Watson and his twin brother, Kareem, both stand 6 feet, 9 inches and could give the Texas frontcourt some problems with their length and effort. Kaseem Watson is playing especially well early in the season with 13.9 points and 6.0 rebounds a game.
