Thanksgiving travel rush: TSA’s tips for a smooth journey

(KTTC) – As millions are preparing to travel to be with loved ones this week, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is gearing up for what could be the busiest Thanksgiving travel period on record.

The agency is projecting a 6% increase of travelers compared to 2023.

Between Tuesday and next Monday, TSA is projecting to screen more than 18.3 million people with Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday to be the busiest travel days.

Jessica Mayle, TSA regional spokesperson, said to get through the airport in an efficient manner, it all starts at home and with an empty bag.

If the bag is from a recent trip, make sure to go through it so you’re not bringing items you aren’t aware of through the security check point.

Mayle emphasized the important reminder of the 311 liquid rule. All liquids must be 3.4 ounces or less in one quart size bag per passenger.

“It is Thanksgiving, I know people like to bring those very special treats to be with their family. So just remember, solid foods are fine if you want to bring turkey, stuffing, cakes, cookies, pies,” Mayle said. “But foods that can be spread or liquids, soft cheeses, gravy, mashed potatoes, even those count under our 3.4-ounce regulation.”

She also recommends travelers arrive to the airport at least two hours before their flight and she said that’s two hours from stepping foot in the airport.

Most importantly, make sure your travel ID is ready when approaching the security check point.
