Thanksgiving weather updates: Travel chaos, dozens of US Flights Cancelled

Dozens of flights in and out of the United States have been canceled and hundreds were delayed over the Thanksgiving Holiday.

According to the website Flightaware.com as of 6 a.m. EST there were 27 U.S. flights canceled and 254 delays.

The news comes as the northern U.S. was hit by a snow lake effect on Thursday according to the National Weather Service (NWS), with roads closed and travel warnings issued in New York counties after four feet of snow was dumped around Oswego, Jefferson, and Lewis.

Lake Effect Hits Canadian Border and Alaska

Towards Canadian border, a single winter weather advisory is in place in Minnesota for St. Louis County. Two to 4 inches of snow are likely in this area.

“Lake effect snow showers off Rainy Lake are expected to create conditions ranging from locally moderate snowfall with quick reductions in visibility to dry weather just a few miles away,” the NWS advisory reads. “Be prepared for rapid changes in weather, visibility, and road conditions.”

Finally, in Alaska, two winter weather advisories are in place, one for Petersburg Borough and another for Hyder, where “a strengthening system incoming from the west will push warm air northward Wednesday afternoon with a wintry mix.”

“Wet and dense” snow is expected before more cold air moves in, when snow will become increasingly fluffy and dry.

Winter Weather Warnings in 8 States

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a slew of winter weather warnings and advisories.

Heavy snow is expected throughout New England and beyond on Thursday and could throw a wrench into holiday travel plans across the region. Snow and rain are expected to stretch from northern Pennsylvania all the way up to Maine throughout Thursday and into Friday morning.

Almost all of Maine is covered by winter storm warnings, where five to 10 inches of snow are expected from 4 p.m. ET on Thursday through to Friday morning. Higher amounts are expected in Piscataquis County to southeast Aroostook County.

Lake Effect Snow to Hit New York Counties

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Lake Effect Snow Warning for Oswego, Jefferson, and Lewis counties in New York from Friday, Nov. 29, at 7 a.m. EST until Monday, Dec. 2, at 7 p.m. EST.

The NWS forecasts heavy lake-effect snow, with total accumulations of three to four feet in the most persistent bands. The greatest snowfall is expected across the northern Tug Hill region and areas just south and east of Watertown.

“Travel will be very difficult to impossible within the heaviest portion of the band,” said the NSW warning. “The hazardous conditions will impact the Friday morning and evening commutes.”

“During lake effect snow, the weather can vary from bands of locally heavy snow with greatly reduced visibilities to dry conditions just a few miles away,” it continued. “Be prepared for rapid changes in weather, visibility, and road conditions.”
