The 10 Most Iconic Sailor Moon Looks Inspired by High Fashion, Ranked
Fashion and intricate character design are a huge part of Sailor Moon. Naoko Takeuchi poured so much of her interests, life experience, and education into her manga series, Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon. One of those interests is high fashion, and Takeuchi wove it so beautifully into her series that the designs remain consistent in both the original anime, and in the Sailor Moon Crystal reboot.
Usagi, her friends, the villains, and even minor characters have amazing looks. Takeuchi drew straight from the runways for her designs. High fashion also influences streetwear, and the Sailor Guardians, in particular, have amazing casual outfits. The ’80s and ’90s fashion in Sailor Moon is coming back in style, so audiences can take inspiration from the characters’ wardrobe.
10 Mamoru Makes Paperbag Pants Look Dashing
Mamoru Goes for Boxy Silhouettes
Mamoru is a former model in the original ’90s anime, and he has some very memorable looks. He generally goes for taupe paperbag pants and earth-toned blazers. Usagi runs into Mamoru on the street, and he seems to be on his way to school or a job, so he looks rather trim and professional.
Mamoru’s professional looks make him look more mature. He also has his fair share of fun outfits, too. He loves to wear color-blocked shirts and vibrant athletic wear. Both Mamoru’s casual outfits and his more prim getups look like they came from a catalog in the 1980s.
9 Usagi Wears Gorgeous Pastels & Disguise Costumes
Her Disguise Pen Never Misses
Usagi is known for her sailor suit-inspired uniform and Sailor Guardian costume, but those are just two of her amazing outfits. Usagi has the perfect ensemble for every occasion. She tends to go for pastel colors–especially pink.
Usagi’s summer and spring wardrobes are the most memorable. She wears a timeless pale sundress and a baby blue, cropped denim jacket between school and Sailor Guardian business. She accesorizes beautifully, too, often wearing a large crescent moon necklace. Usagi will use her fashion taste and versatile style for Sailor Guardian business, too, with the help of her Disguise Pen, which turns her into many things, from musician to flight attendant to photographer.
8 Queen Nehelenia Is a Dark Vision of Regency Fashion
Queen Nehelenia Foils Neo-Queen Serenity
Queen Nehelenia is one of a few dark queen-archetype villains in Sailor Moon. She wears a regal, empire-waisted gown in black and cream, similar to a lady’s gown in the Regency era. She also wears complimentary jewelry that underlines her strength and pride.

Some anime ladies have fashion that Morticia Addams would approve of. Their gothic fashions and mysterious personalities make them top tier waifus.
Queen Nehelenia is more than just a historical fashion plate, her styling plays a very specific role in her character and story arc. Between her dress and her hairstyle, she’s meant to be Neo-Queen Serenity’s dark double. She looks like a version of Serenity who never grew past her insecurities, which makes for some very cohesive and effective storytelling.
7 Haruka Charmed the Ladies in Her Tailored Suits
Sailor Uranus Has Expensive Style
Naoko Takeuchi said that she designed Haruka, Sailor Uranus, to have a more masculine style. There are many Sailor Guardians, and while some of them are hyper-feminine-presenting, others differ. Haruka is an incredibly charming and debonair person, and Usagi thinks of her as handsome.
Haruka’s style matches her swaggering personality perfectly. She wears tailored suits often, lending her an air of elegant strength. Her jackets and slim-leg trousers look like they’re expensive, even with their simple lines. Sometimes she also wears slightly more romantic pieces, but more romantic in the way of men on a romance novel cover, with her billowing white dress shirts.
6 The Women of the Moon Kingdom Wear the Same Hairstyle
Usagi, Queen Serenity, & Chibiusa Wear Odango
The royal family and delegates of the Moon Kingdom all wear the same hairstyle. The late Queen Serenity, Princess Serenity (and eventually Neo-Queen Serenity), Chibiusa, and even Luna in her human form wear their hair styled in odango. Mamoru nicknames Usagi “meatball head” because of her hair, but the style is quite elegant and cute at the same time.
The odango hairstyle is pretty popular throughout anime, but the characters in Sailor Moon really master the style. Characters like Koan, Chibiusa (and her villain alter ego, Wicked Lady) wear their odango in a conical style, which makes the hair resemble cat ears. The hairstyle is instantly recognizable, and it adds to the imagery, like cats and rabbits, consistently associated with the Moon Kingdom.
5 Koan Sashays Around in Thierry Mugler
The Youngest Spectre Sister Dresses Like an Evil Ballerina
Koan is the youngest of the Spectre Sisters who serve the Black Moon Clan. She and her sisters’ powers and character design are meant to be the evil, mirror version of the Inner Sailor Guardians. Koan’s flowing black hair, purple eyes, and fire powers mark her as Sailor Mars’ foil.

With so many villains in Sailor Moon, an iconic, bombastic outfit design helps set them apart.
Koan is one of the most popular Sailor Moon villains to cosplay because of how gorgeous her dress is. Naoko Takeuchi got Koan’s look straight from the Fall 1992 Thierry Mugler runway. The high fashion runway look is a pink, pinstriped bodysuit, a raven feather tutu, and conical odango hair. Koan’s sumptuous, fantastical look matches her vivacious personality.
4 Fans Still Talk About Rei’s Pink Overalls
Rei Loves to Wear Vibrant Colors
Rei Hino, Sailor Mars, wears a rather subdued school uniform with a gray skirt, and simple red and white miko clothing for her duties at the Shinto shrine. She may be a very no-nonsense person, which would fit her more classical style in school and work, but she’s also a vibrant person. It seems like any chance Rei gets, she goes for more vibrant and youthful colors and silhouettes.
Rei’s Sailor Guardian uniform is red and purple, accompanied by scarlet high heels. She also wears very colorful casual outfits. Rei’s bright pink overalls have become notorious in the fandom, and cosplayers sometimes make their own version of her overalls. She wears them a few times in the original ’90s anime, and they contrast perfectly against her long, black hair.
3 Tuxedo Mask Makes a Scene in His Eveningwear
Mamoru’s Tux & Tophat Charms the Ladies
Tuxedo Mask may not be a Sailor Guardian, but he is easily one of the most recognized characters in all anime. His costume design is simple, but it suits him so well that Usagi and many other ladies swoon over him. As Tuxedo Mask, Mamoru wears a black tuxedo, a tophat, and a billowing black cape lined with red. In the manga and in Sailor Moon Crystal, Tuxedo Mask also wears a medallion similar to the one Dracula is often depicted wearing.

Tuxedo Mask’s suit looks similar to Dior tuxedos with its perfectly tailored slim-fit. He makes the perfect complement to Princess Serenity’s white and gold dress. Whenever he shows up to help Sailor Moon, his tux and cape add a level of cultured drama.
2 Wicked Lady Makes Villainy Look Fierce
Naoko Takeuchi Was Inspired by Yves Saint Laurent
Chibiusa, Sailor Chibi Moon, is Neo-Queen Serenity’s daughter, and the heir to Crystal Tokyo. As a princess, she wears a white and gold princess gown just like her mother does. It makes sense that her gown for her villain arc would be just as gorgeous–if not, moreso.
Naoko Takuechi drew inspiration for Chibiusa’s gown as Wicked Lady from a Yves Saint Laurent ad campaign. Yves Saint Laurent is known for designs that make women feel elegant and confident. Chibiusa struggles with confidence, and that’s how Wiseman so easily manipulates her and transforms her into her evil alter ego, Wicked Lady. It makes sense that Takeuchi would borrow such an iconic look from a label known for fostering confidence.
1 Princess Serenity Wears Bridal White & Regal Gold
Serenity’s Gown Is Inspired by a 1992 Dior Dress
Princess Serenity wears a white empire-waisted gown with spiral cap sleeves and gold embellishments on the bodice. The dress is bridal, incredibly regal, and youthful at the same time. It’s the perfect sort of dress for a princess of the Moon to wear as she falls in love for the first time. She wears the dress as Neo-Queen Serenity, as well.
Serenity’s white gown is modeled directly off of a vintage Christian Dior look from his 1992 spring and summer collection. The dress was modeled off of Grecian architecture–it looks exactly like a temple pillar. The gown is a direct reminder of the fallen Moon Kingdom, which also had Grecian-inspired architecture, and a weighty feeling of lofty antiquity.
