The 5 Ws of Business Bits
Since I’m sneaking away for this week and can’t gather new stuff, here’s an explanation to what I do.
I try to have three or four lead items with photos the sources contribute each week.
The information for a business opening or moving includes the basic Ws — the who, what, when, where and why. It’s the name of it, location, what it offers, its history, when to open (opened), the days and hours open, the key people and positions, the contact info (phone and website) and anything else.
If it’s an eatery, I want the type of seating for how many, the amenities such as TVs, decor, balcony, views, takeout and/or delivery.
I want an architect rendering of a planned place and a photo of named person or people in or outside the place. Information for a new place should include the address, if there’s a name of the place, its size, what businesses have plans for it (and how I connect with them), and if commercial space is available, what should anyone interested do? I’ll run the new building article and then include it in Tidbits and run another article the week before it opens.
I get many of my tips from spies who see or hear about something happening. I check building permit websites. I take different auto routes on commercial streets and watch for things happening.
One of my favorite discoveries was many years ago. I was on Neider Avenue and saw active surveyors. They wouldn’t tell me their source. But later when they were gone, I walked into the area and saw a stake with “Costco” on it. Ah, a big story to search!
