Welcome to Season 3 of the HOWL Podcast from NCPR and the Adirondack Center for Writing!

As with every season of the HOWL podcast, this time around you’ll hear great stories recorded live on stages all over the North Country. But we’ve added an interesting twist for Season 3. We’ve invited a few special guests to tell their stories — at NCPR’s studios, and without a time limit.

We’re kicking things off with local poet jim bourey (the lower-case is intentional), who tells us about how he went from working in the Air Force, to working in a bank, to running a music store, and then to managing an adult drive-in movie theater in the ’80s. It’s exactly what it sounds like: porno films on a big screen outside in a residential neighborhood.

jim’s story is about a different time in America when adult films had entered the main stream and pornographic material represented a fight for First Amendment rights. As he tells it, it took a large cast of bizarre characters to keep the shows running 7 days a week – including Greasy Lester, the projectionist, and two chain-smoking women — both named Virginia — who helped run the full kitchen and snack bar.

Host Ethan Shantie also shares his own stories of running a movie theater – including the time he had to call 911 after a drunk customer smashed his head into the bathroom wall.

It’s a wild episode of the HOWL Podcast and we know you’re going to love it.

Make sure you follow the show so you never miss an episode. And while you’re at it, why not throw a couple of bucks into the hat to support the HOWL? As we launch season 3 we’ve also just launched NCPR’s annual Fall Fundraiser, the time of year when we remind you that shows like this are made possible because of community support. We couldn’t bring you great stories, award-winning news, or one-of-a-kind music programs without your donations. So don’t wait – give now. And thanks.

We’ll see you next week for a story about how things found in the closet can change lives.
