RuPaul’s Drag Race
fave Nina West wrote a post of gratitude on Instagram. “Every year on #SpiritDay I particularly think about the people the stepped up for me when I didn’t have the ability to or when I hadn’t quite found my voice,” she wrote.

West continued: “Thank you to my sisters who were often my first defenders when I was so small. Thank you to the teachers who gave me safe spaces to express myself. Thanks to the friends who held me when I couldn’t stand on my own.

“That is what the spirit of #SpiritDay is all about— to protect and defend our LGBTQIA+ youth and show them that there is a bright and bold future with them in it. I am so proud of who i am and the work I do and i won’t ever stop fighting for those who don’t have the voice to do so. and the truth is, i don’t think i would be here today to do that work without the people who used their voice to protect and defend me. Happy Spirit Day! Thank you GLAAD for helping us mark this day so fabulously.”
