The Latest TikTok Travel Trend Promises Tranquility

Maybe you’ve already seen some of the TikToks. A very tan young blonde woman is floating in clear, turquoise water. She has her arms and a megawatt smile and credits her happiness to the Blue Mind Theory. Unlike so much jargon that trends on TikTok, this isn’t some superfluous trend or word soup. Blue Mind Theory is real, and you can easily take advantage of its benefits on your next water-side vacation.

According to the scientist who coined the term Blue Mind, the late Dr. Wallace J Nichols, Blue Mind Theory explains “the benefits of being in, on, under, or simply near water.” Nichols, a marine biologist, published Blue Mind in 2014. The book used neuroscience and anecdotal accounts to support the idea that being in close proximity to water contributes to the overall health and wellness of the individual.

“Water in all states and forms—the ocean, rivers, lakes and even baths—can make us feel calmer, increase well-being and boost creativity,” Nichols wrote on Instagram in May 2024. “Blue Mind is the mildly meditative state people fall into when they are near, in, on or under water—it is the scientific term used to describe the state of nature and water-associated peace, awe, and connection.”

The theory is so well documented that even other medical bodies have recommended going into a “blue mind state” for the health and wellness benefits. Health insurance giant Blue Cross Blue Shield recommends people seek out water to provide some of the following benefits:

  • Improving problem-solving and creativity skills.
  • Decreases stress hormones and increases hormones responsible for happiness.
  • Expands ability to feel compassion.
  • Can lower pulse rates and induce feelings of calmness.

Obviously, you can be anywhere to experience the effects of Blue Mind—any body of water, near or far, can have the meditative and calming effects Nichols wrote about. But as we all jet off to beautiful beaches, lakesides, creeks, and rivers this summer, you can really take the benefits of Blue Mind to the max.

On your next vacation, consider taking some time to have quiet moments near or in the water. And if you’re looking for the best beaches, lakes, and rivers to have your own Blue Mind experience, don’t worry. Thrillist has all the recommendations you need:
