The Toyota Celica Revival Rumor Seems To Be True
Ever since Toyota started building sports cars again with its line of GR models, it has been hinting at more. The automaker keeps teasing the rebirth of the Celica via videos, quotes from the company’s Chairman, and even from the company newsletter.
Toyota
Toyota is a Japanese automaker founded in 1937 that has developed a reputation for reliability across a multitude of segments, from sports cars and family sedans to pickup trucks and off-roaders. Famous models from the brand include the Hilux, Land Cruiser, Camry, Crown, and Corolla, the latter being the world’s best-selling vehicle nameplate, with more than 50 million Corolla-badged vehicles being sold since it was first introduced. Toyota typically competes in the mainstream market, but is also famous for launching Lexus as a luxury sub-brand to take on Mercedes-Benz.

Now, Japanese website Best Car is reporting that Toyota has confirmed it. The publication reports that during the Rally Japan last weekend, a company executive Vice President confirmed that the Celica was coming back.
Toyota VP Drops Big News At Rally Japan
The magazine reports that the shocking news dropped at a question and answer session the magazine was running. The outlet asked Toyota Chair Akio Toyoda if the rumors of the sports car coming back had any substance. Instead of saying yes or no, he simply passed the question on to an executive who would definitely know the answer (not that he wouldn’t, of course; Mr. Toyoda is the father of Gazoo Racing).

Toyota GR86 Finally Gets Turbo Power From The GR Corolla
Toyota has fitted the GR Corolla’s AWD turbo-three into a GR86. It’s what we’ve all been asking for.

Toyoda is said to have deferred to Toyota Chief Technology Officer and VP for mid-sized models Hiroki Nakajima. Best Car quotes Nakajima as saying “We’re making the Celica” while up on stage.
“To be honest, there is no sign of it right now. However, there are many people within the company who are eagerly awaiting the Celica. So… I’m not sure if it’s okay to say this in a public forum, but we’re doing the Celica!” he is reported as saying.
Toyota Will Also Do Generational New Gas Engine
News of a new Celica wasn’t the only bombshell dropped at the event. Nakajima also said that the company would be developing a new gas engine, one that Morizo would approve of as a highlight of his legacy (Morizo is the name Toyoda uses when he is racing).
The announcement of the new engine came after Toyoda listed his favorite engines, but no Toyota engine was on the list. Nakajima said that needed to be fixed: “We will create an engine that Morizo will want to leave behind. It’s not a matter of whether we can release it or not, or whether we will leave it behind or not, but we are going to release it!”

The Automotive World Needs More CEOs Like Akio Toyoda Of Toyota
We believe that Toyoda is a visionary who fully understands the ins and outs of mobility, despite what some think.
We give you this news with one caveat. While Best Car has made some excellent future predictions on Japanese products, that hasn’t always been the case. So maybe wait for something more concrete before you head down to a dealer trying to leave a deposit. Take it with a grain of salt, is what we’re saying.
However, maybe a bit less salt than normal. There have been those previous rumors, plus dropped hints from Toyota including hidden on a whiteboard in a company anime. And new company boss Koji Sato has called it “a life’s dream” to bring the sports car brand back.
An eighth-generation Toyota Celica could take on almost any automotive form. It has been sold as a coupe, convertible, or hatchback. It has been front-, rear-, and all-wheel drive. So a new one could be based on anything in the company lineup from a Corolla to a C-HR.
