The UNC football program loses again in typical UNC football fashion

At this point, I’m at a loss for words.

Normally, the saying goes “North Carolina won in typical North Carolina fashion.” However, for the UNC football program, the saying needs to be adjusted:

“The UNC football program lost in typical UNC football fashion.”

441. Final. 41. 436. GT. 34

With just 44 seconds remaining in regulation, the Tar Heels tied the game with a chip-shot field goal by Noah Burnette. The tie lasted all of two plays, as Georgia Tech, who had their backup quarterback in and were likely willing to run the clock out to force overtime, broke a 68-yard touchdown run to seal the deal.

Sadly, at this point, I think we all expected them to lose this game in some absolutely awful way.

Sure, you can’t necessarily blame one drive for the loss. Let’s remember: Burnette missed a field goal earlier in the game, and John Copenhaver dropped what looked like a perfect pass from Jacolby Criswell in the end zone, a score that would’ve given the Tar Heels the lead instead of the tie with time remaining in the fourth quarter.

You’re also not going to win many games when your defense allows 371 yards on the ground. On 48 attempts, Georgia Tech averaged 7.7 yards per-carry, as the Tar Heels front seven did a horrible job of limiting the damage on the ground.

Some things never change. Omarion Hampton is elite at what he does (and deserves much better than this), while the rest of the team leaves a lot of room for desire. While football games are often determined by a handful of plays, the UNC football program once again came up short, a trait that has followed them throughout their four-game losing streak.

The good news is: the UNC football program can’t lose next week…. who knows though: this group might find a way to lose during their bye week given what we’ve seen from them essentially for the last month.
