These Are Going to Be the Most Popular Travel Destinations in 2025

It’s been a whirlwind of a year filled with perfect weekends all over the country and all around the world. In our travels (and in our dreams), we’ve been fortunate enough to come across the most beautiful hotels in the world, the most beautiful islands on the planet, and the best luxury destinations from West to East, North to South. As much as we’d love to revisit some of our favorite vacation spots and stopovers in 2025, we’re feeling inspired to branch beyond our comfort zone—and Expedia Group is leading the way.

The beloved travel site—alongside Hotels.com and VRBO—just released Unpack ’25, a breakdown of the top travel trends for 2025. In analyzing travel data from over 25,000 travelers, Expedia Group was able to unveil (er, unpack) the most sought-after cities, sites, and phenomena around the world for the upcoming year. In addition to uncovering the Top 10 Detour Destinations of 2025 (must-see vacation spots off the beaten path from typical tourist attractions), Expedia Group revealed that next year, many people will be traveling in search of natural phenomena (like synchronous firefly season and the penguin parade), as well as to live out their on-screen fantasy, inspired by shows like The Real Housewives of Dubai, Yellowstone, and And Just Like That…

“Expedia Group continuously works to blend technology with travel, making journeys simpler and more enjoyable. The Unpack report is our opportunity to reflect on what travelers are seeking and how our partners are innovating,” Ariane Gorin, CEO of Expedia Group, says in the report.

In 2025, Expedia Group expects vacations to be less about the most frequented tourist destinations and more about the worthwhile detours beyond their borders.

“Expedia’s destinations of the year are near popular hotspots, making them ideal day trips while also being attractive as main attractions,” the report reveals. “In the hunt for the less crowded and less well-known, 63% of consumers say they are likely to visit a Detour Destination on their next trip.”

If your idea of a memorable vacation marries relaxation with once-in-a-lifetime experiences, you may want to hop on the phenomena-inspired travel bandwagon. According to Expedia Group, tons of travelers sought out stunning vacation homes to witness the total solar eclipse along its path of totality in 2024, and that trend is expected to continue into 2025, with travel lovers booking itineraries in cities where awe-inspiring natural events occur.

“Survey data revealed that the Northern Lights are the top phenomenon travelers want to see, followed by geological phenomena like volcanoes, geysers, and hot springs,” the report reveals. “Eighty percent of travelers say it’s important to stay in a place that offers prime viewing for these natural wonders, so it’s no surprise that private vacation homes in secluded or rural destinations are ideal for phenomena-seekers.”
