These Fashion Moments Won Big at the 2024 ESPY Awards
The 2024 ESPY Awards were held last night in Los Angeles, with the most notable figures in sports convening to celebrate elite athleticism. While the ESPYs red carpet is always an opportunity for athletes to trade their uniforms for designer looks, the intersection of sports and fashion has arguably never been more thrilling than it is right now.
The NBA tunnel walk phenomenon—popularized by style-enthused players like Russell Westbrook, P.J. Tucker, and Chris Paul turning their locker room entrance into a high-fashion runway—has been steadily spreading to other professional leagues. (See: NFL superstar Stefon Diggs shopping for game day fits in Paris, the proliferation of designer pieces in the Formula One paddocks, and all the fashion at the 2024 WNBA draft.) Last month, Vogue celebrated 100 years of fashion and sport during Vogue World: Paris, where Joe Burrow, Venus Williams and Victor Wembanyama were among athletes who walked in the show. And in a few weeks, the world will witness what is likely to be the most fashionable Olympics to date, when the summer games—sponsored by LVMH—land in the City of Light.
Last night, Jaylen Brown, Demar Hamlin and Candace Parker were among those dressed to the nines for the 2024 ESPY Awards, which were hosted by Serena Williams. Meghan Markle, Prince Harry, and Venus Williams attended, too.
“Serena is not only a tennis legend but also a fashion icon, and I wanted her looks to reflect both her athletic prowess and her sense of style,” Williams’s stylist, Kesha McLeod, tells Vogue. Williams walked the carpet in a black Armani Privé gown with a bejeweled peek-a-boo bra, later changing into a paillette Ferragamo column dress and a short, red Versace number, in addition to various other looks.
