This Is Where People in Maine Want to Travel for Christmas

According to a recent report that highlights where most Americans want to travel for the holidays, Maine’s selections make perfect sense.

But here’s the ironic part—Maine is called ‘Vacationland,’ yet we’re leaving our vacation spot to go on vacation somewhere else. It’s funny to think that even Mainers might be seeking a getaway beyond the state known for its vacations!

But how does one even determine the most popular holiday travel destinations? Especially for people here in Maine?

Thrillist’s report, ‘The Most Popular Holiday Travel Destinations, by State,’ used data from social media and Google to analyze popular winter vacation spots. The researchers at Cloudwards tracked online searches and mentions to find out where people from each state prefer to travel during the holidays. The study highlights that while everyone’s idea of home is different, the places they want to escape to during the holidays tend to be more similar than expected.

With that in mind, what is the top holiday travel destination for Mainers? Where are people here looking to go?

According to Thrillist’s report, ‘The Most Popular Holiday Travel Destinations, by State,’ the most popular domestic travel destination for Mainers is Boston, Massachusetts. Considering that Boston is New England’s largest city, this comes as no surprise.

But Thrillist didn’t stop at domestic travel. What is the top international destination for people in Maine?

Quebec City takes the top spot as the most popular international destination for Mainers—and for residents of every New England state. This, too, is based on Thrillist’s report.
