This local beach was just called ‘coolest’ in California by Travel + Leisure
A Sonoma County beach is the Golden State’s “coolest,” at least according to a recent feature in Travel + Leisure.
The July 25 story recommended anyone who wanted a “unique day at the beach” head to Johnson’s Beach located 14 miles inland along the Russian River in Guerneville.
Johnson’s Beach was founded by Gertie and Ernie Johnson in 1918. Sonoma County Tourism calls the beach a “Russian River tradition” that has lasted over 100 years.
The resort is currently owned by siblings Ethan, Alison and Andrew Joseph.
Beach visitors can rent canoes, kayaks, inner tubes, chairs and umbrellas. Plus, there’s a roped-off kiddie pool and snack bar, complete with beer and wine.
After a day on the water or soaking up the sun, the article suggests booking a stay in one of the bungalows, cabins, canvas tents or bringing a pop up tent for the weekend.
The bungalows, built in the 1920s and filled with local art and furniture, “will transport you right back to it’s founding year,” according to Travel + Leisure.
For solo travelers or couples, the tiny cabins on the beach include a king bed, mini kitchen, private bathroom, fire pit and picnic table.
The canvas tents, another lodging option, give a rugged feel without “having to rough it,” the story said. The tents are sat on wooden slats made to withstand outdoor elements. Each includes a queen bed, front porch, picnic table and access to shared bathrooms and showers.
The last stay option is the historic lodge. Built close to the water’s edge, it includes four bedrooms and a full kitchen.
Rates range from around $160 to $600 a night depending on lodging type and dates.
