1989
Coordinated by Marian Law, Executive Director of Lower South Platte Water District, 5th and 6th graders at Platte Valley Elementary helped to plant native grasses along a stream bank protection project.
JHS prom royalty was Todd Blochowitz, Kristen Carlson, Jenni Kelley, Danny Werner and King Michael Nelson, Queen Pam Wegman. Jason and Jeffrey Buettenback and Mariah Rice were crown bearers.
RHS royalty was Jonathan Nordyke, Ryan Berges, Jonetta Durbin, Rhonda Nyp, King Eugene Neugebauer, Queen Barb Brandt.
Directed by Becky Kizer, Julesburg was one of three schools in NE Colorado to offer the new Colorado Pre-School Program.
Anne was back offering quality hair care at The Hair Merchant. K-K Cafe advertised home-made, from scratch, no cholesterol pies.
Lions won their league track meet with first place finished from: Jeff Blockowitz (discus) , Travis Davis (shot) Brady Mercer (110 high and 300 intermediate hurdles) JD Nein (1600), Buettenback, Renquist, Werner and Nein ( 3200 m relay), Mercer, Lanckriet, Strasser and Lacy (400 m relay and 800 m relay). In girls competition, Tori Sorensen won the shot put.
Winning the Platte Valley Elementary Science Fair were Jeff Donjon, Doug Yoshimoto, Laura Rundall, Natalie McClary and Billie Sittner.
1984
New playground equipment, funded by the Colorado Lottery, was being enjoyed by children at the Meline Swimming Pool Park.
An unidentified man was apprehended and arrested for speeding and driving a stolen vehicle. The man eluded law enforcement for several hours as the river bottom was searched. Assisting were CST Larry Luft, Sheriff Herb Fliethman, Police Chief Gene Mikelson, Officers Bob Bowker, Pete Pedersen, Russ Gronewold and Steve Etienne. Ron Knipp flew his airplane over the river and Sheriff’s Posse Terry Hinde, Lee Hinde and Sal Garcia were also called in to assist.
Julesburg Safeway store presented JHS with a new Atari 1200XL computer which was placed in the 7th and 8th grade math room and under the direction of Dennis Hill.
Kathy Anderson, a senior at JHS, was named an Academic All-American by the National Secondary Education Council.
The Ovid Methodist Church was hosting a consignment sale, auction and lunch to boost its building fund. Lloyd Michael was auctioneer. The Spanish Assembly of God in Julesburg organized a building project to replace the home of Maria Infante of Ovid.
1979
Wilber Peperkorn of the Sedgwick County ASCS office reported that Sedgwick County wheat farmers have lost about half of their intended crop due to drought .
Attorneys for the Unification Church under the leadership of Sun Myung Moon have notified Mayor Clark Bernhardt that they will be in the area and do not want any conflicts with law enforcement. Police Chief Gene Mikelson stated Julesburg would uphold the Green River Ordinance which prohibits door to door vending at private residences.
RHS prom royalty were Brenda Fredrick, Eric Berges, King Robert Sauder and Queen Cheryl Shimamoto. Crown bearers were Tary Saya and Rici Mollendor.
JHS Student Council sold tickets to shopping sprees held at the Safeway store in Julesburg. 1st Place winner, Arlene Clark got to shop for two minutes picking up $57.83 worth and second place shopper, Beth Johnson, picked up $49.89 in one minute. Assistant manager, Mike Woltemath was on hand to help out. JHS FHA honored senior members, Maureen Donnelly, Susan Andersen and Sandy Clayton. Selected as Boys State delegates were Robert Paiz and Doug Alexander. Alternates were Rick Sanger and David Kontny. First place finishes for girls track at RHS were Rhonda Brownell 80 yd low hurdles and high jump, Lisa Ault in the long jump, Gail Lei in the 440, and first in the mile relay: P. Onken, C. Onken, C. Sanquist and S. DeManche.
JHS sophomore Lisa Palic set a new meet record in the shot-put with 33-8. JHS boys track had eight, first place finishes out of 16 events. Turning in winning times and distances were Barry Mercer, Kory Kenney, Quentin Walline, Mike Ness, John Serrato, Tracy Kizer, David Kontny and Russ McKinstry.
1974
RHS Raider baseball was 3-0 in Class A Lower Platte Valley conference baseball action. Leading hitters against Haxtun were Mike lauer and Tom Inouye. Against Pawnee, Kirk Sittner’s double and single led the hitting.
A wild gunshot-puncturated chase at speeds up to 130 mph began in Ogallala and ended in Sedgwick. The murder suspect from Oklahoma was apprehended by officers from Colorado and Nebraska.
Kathy Kizer, JoAnn Rewinkel and Delberta Harris were selected as Girls State delegates. Alternates were Tammy Zimmerman, Deanna Jenkins and Rebecca Rundall.
The engagement of Mary DeCastro and Bill Collins was announced.
