Threads working to quell influx of engagement bait

Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram and Threads, has announced that his team is aware of the engagement bait problem on Threads and is working on a fix.

He posted on Threads saying, “We’ve seen an increase in engagement-bait on Threads and we’re working to get it under control.”

Personally, I’ve been using Threads a lot more lately, and I’m really glad this is getting under control. I feel like I see so many posts that are just people asking banal questions or posting rage bait, which is something I see a lot of since my algorithm is pretty tech-focused, and Android and Apple fans love to argue about which system is better.

In an interview on The Verge’s Decoder Podcast, Mark Zuckerberg said that he thinks that lots of post engagement are the sign of a healthy social network, but as we’ve learned in the past week or so, that can also just be crap. Mosseri stated, “Not all comments or replies are good. Mark’s comment is more about Twitter pioneering a format where the reply can be elevated, which is a good thing, but that doesn’t mean that every reply should be.”

Other reporters have found that rage bait works so well that it would keep posts viral for days, and on a social media platform that rewards creators with money, it seems that many will just use rage-bait to fuel their accounts so they can make some extra cash each month.

Hopefully, this will get resolved soon.
