It’s Joe Ryan Day today, and that’s once again been a good day for Twins fans and backers. Any time you have a sub-3.00 ERA and a sub-1.00 WHIP, you’re having a good season, I don’t care what any other metrics have to say. Ryan has been especially strong on the road, posting a 1.44 ERA and .207 opponent on-base average, so I’m a believer that he can hold down this wildly inconsistent Astros offense early in the game. From there, it might not take much for the Twins to grab an early lead against Framber Valdez, who had a bad May against a very soft schedule of opposing lineups. The Astros just aren’t that good, at least not yet, so I’m taking the Twins to get in front early today.

I can’t pass up the juicy return on this, especially with how good Chris Sale has been lately. The Braves lefty posted a 0.56 ERA in May, throwing basically untouchable stuff start in and start out. But the key is obviously how long he’s going in those starts, and he’s pitched 7 full innings in 3 straight and in 6 of his past 8 games.

All that’s needed here is for him to start the 7th inning and record an out, which I think he’ll definitely do against this Oakland lineup. The A’s are rough against lefties like Sale, ranking 26th in wOBA, 28th in runs, and 29th in batting average. At home where he’s been at his best, Sale should go plenty deep into this game to cash the juicy return.
