Saturday is here, and with it your new NYT Mini Crossword puzzle guide—me! As with ‘Strands’ I rotate this guide with my colleagues, Kris Holt and Paul Tassi. Today, I’ll be helping you with Saturday’s Mini, which had a couple tricky words, though partly that’s because I know literally nothing about Beyonce other than she’s popular (I’m not even really sure why—please don’t hurt me).

The NYT Mini is a smaller, quicker, more digestible, bite-sized version of the larger and more challenging NYT Crossword, and unlike its larger sibling, it’s free-to-play without a subscription to The New York Times. You can play it on the web or the app, though you’ll need the app to tackle the archive.

One good tactic with crossword puzzles is to try to get as many ACROSS as possible first and then you’ll find a lot of the DOWN are already done—or vice versa if the ones ACROSS are trickier.

A few hints for the tougher ones in case you don’t just want the answers right away:

1 Down: John ____ of Mars

2 Down: This is three words shoved together.

4 Down: Those paper things we read go between them.

1 Across: John Wayne, Wyatt Earp

8 Across: Crayons

10 Across: Game of Thrones star, ___ Harrington

11 Across: Dances With Wolves

A bit of a tougher puzzle than some Mini Crosswords, if only because there’s quite a few words on this one—close to double yesterday’s, and they’re longer. And you need to have a passing knowledge of Beyonce, which I simply do not! I also was not familiar with those colors of Crayola Crayons, and I often find myself looking at the wrong direction, like some sort of dyslexic crossword-puzzler. Across is left and right Erik! Not down or up! Sheesh!
