The Flame of Hope is making its way around the state in support of Special Olympics New York.

On Thursday, the Sergeant Thomas Sanfratello Memorial Law Enforcement Torch Run made its way through Batavia. Special Olympics athletes were joined on the run by members of the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office, Batavia Police Department and New York State Police.

The run started at the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office on Park Road and finished at the Arc GLOW on Walnut Street.

It’s a tradition that has been going on for more than 30 years. The run is led and organized by the Guardians of the Flame, which includes members of law enforcement from agencies throughout New York.

The event helps local athletes, supporters and representatives of the torch run raise money and awareness for Special Olympics New York.
