Travel disruption continues in wake of Storm Bert

Rail passengers in the north of England are being urged to check before they travel in the aftermath of Storm Bert.

Northern said services between Workington and Lancaster were still unable to run in either direction due to flooding in the Ulverston area.

Limited services are operating between Workington and Carlisle following Saturday’s snow and rain.

Routes between Manchester Airport and Glasgow and Edinburgh, as well as Liverpool and Glasgow, and Edinburgh and Newcastle, are also affected.

Northern warned there was likely to be weather-related disruption across a number of other routes on it network, leading to short-notice cancellations.

It said “adverse” conditions meant it was unable to operate replacement buses.

Avanti West Coast is scheduled to run services between Carlisle and Edinburgh after cancelling trains all day on Saturday.

Having “strongly” urged customers not to travel north of Carlisle on Saturday, TransPennine Express said people with tickets for this weekend may use them on its services tomorrow.

Engineers from electricity North West were aiming to restore power overnight to the remaining 450 properties having earlier got supplies back up and running for more than 11,000 others.

It said overhead lines had been damaged by “flying debris and ice accumulation” with teams carrying out repairs since damage was first reported at 07:00 GMT on Saturday.

Workington and Penrith had been hit particularly badly by the storm, the company added.
