Travel grants available to CSUF students

The Undergraduate Research Opportunity Center at Cal State Fullerton announced student travel grant opportunities for the 2024-25 academic year, which can fund travel and registration expenses for both undergraduate and graduate students.

The grant covers conference costs which encompass symposiums, congress, art competitions, performances and auditions. Participation in conferences are expected to be directly linked into the student degree program requirements.

“We have between $30-40,000 to get out, so it’s a lot of money and generally we give about anywhere between $200 and $750 for travel,” said Nicole Bonuso, the administrator of the UROC travel grant.

UROC receives funding from both the Scott-Jewett Fund and the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs.

“From this travel grant, I was able to receive help to defray the costs associated with me attending and presenting at the chemistry conference,” said Celine Diep, a grant recipient.

Grant awards are disbursed as a reimbursement to students after costs become paid. Students are required to submit receipts to receive the reimbursement.

“I was able to showcase my work nationally and received invaluable feedback from the chemistry community,” Diep said.

UROC presents numerous opportunities to help students engage in work beyond what their degree offers, implementing grants, summer programs, fellowships, conferences and research competitions throughout the California State University system.

“One opportunity that is invaluable to students, [is] working one on one with a faculty member in the department they’re in, mak[ing] that student more marketable, their education is just all that much richer,” Bonuso said.

Applicants are advised to apply at least 30 days before traveling, with all applications being accepted on a rolling basis.

To apply, students must submit application components, proof of conference programs or documents providing the appropriate travel dates, locations, registration fees, travel budget forms and a faculty mentor recommendation letter.

Applications are open to all CSUF students, as long as they are enrolled in a degree program during the semester they apply. Students must be in good academic standing without academic probation. The grant favors students who have not previously received a UROC travel grant.

The applications are accepted on a rolling basis, with applications and information available on InfoReady.
