LEAVENWORTH — A photograph from Leavenworth photographer Mike Warren, of Mountain Groove Photography, has placed third in a travel photo contest hosted by the Washington Post.
In February, Warren traveled to Brazil during Carnival, the celebration of Brazilian culture and traditions held annually before Lent, and attended a large parade in Rio de Janeiro.
“Brazilian Carnival includes a contest between the thousands of samba schools in Brazil to be named the top school in the country,” said Warren by email from Budapest. “The very top schools put on a parade through a stadium in Rio de Janeiro that seats over 100,000 people. The parade includes music, floats and lots of dancers in the most elaborate costumes.”
From up in the stands, amongst the crowds of parade attendees, Warren shot his photograph “Samba Dancers at Rio Carnival”.
The photo features vibrant colors and stars costumed dancers from one of the top samba schools.
On Aug. 5, the Washington Post announced the top five winners of the publication’s 25th annual travel photo contest. Warren’s photograph placed third.
“It’s an incredible honor,” said Warren. “There were apparently thousands of submittals, and some of the other images selected are amazing, so I feel very honored.”
