The Society of American Travel Writers is bringing its annual convention to northern Indiana next year. The LaGrange County Convention and Visitors Bureau says the five-day event will enhance the visibility and attractiveness of Shipshewana and Indiana as a travel destination.

The event will take place May 19-23 and is expected to bring about 70 expert journalists to the region. Shipshewana was chosen from among 12 possible locations for the convention.

Sonya Nash, executive director of the LaGrange County CVB said in a news release that being selected as the host reflects the organization’s commitment to marketing Shipshewana as a unique destination.

“Writers will find a treasure trove of stories in our small towns, from charming locals and rich cultural experiences to thrilling entertainment,” Nash said. “Sharing what the region has to offer will engage audiences and highlight why millions visit each year.”

The Blue Gate Garden Inn & Conference Center will serve as the host site for the convention, and attendees will also visit attractions such as The Blue Gate Performing Arts Center, Shipshewana Auction & Flea Market, and Cook’s Bison Ranch.

“Hosting the SATW in Shipshewana will bring direct spending on hotels, meals, transportation, and other services, all benefiting our local businesses,” a CVB spokesperson said in an email to Inside INdiana Business. “Additionally, the media coverage from these writers will reach millions of readers and potential travelers, generating long-term economic benefits.”

The convention has previously been held in place such as Shreveport, Louisiana; El Paso, Texas; and Mackinac Island, Michigan.

The event will come nearly a year after Shipshewana hosted the Midwest Travel Network Conference, when the town was named “Destination of the Year.”
