Travelers begin holiday travels on the roads and in the skies

GULFPORT, Miss. (WLOX) – Holiday travels are underway, and the Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport is shaping up to receive an overflow.

“We’re set to eclipse our number of travelers for the past 10 years, so travel is up, and people are excited to get out so we’re happy to see more travelers, especially during the holiday season,” said Chaille Munn.

One of those travelers is Kalyah Kennedy who is coming from Minnesota to see family here in South Mississippi.

She says she’s always traveling to see family during the season and also says the Gulfport airport provided an easy method of making sure everything ran smoothly for her.

“The holidays are when I travel the most mainly because of work,” said Kennedy. “I will say from here, Minnesota to Gulfport, it has been very pleasant. Everyone has been extremely helpful from the airline staff, pilot, and even from other citizens from the plane. Everyone has asked to help me in some sort of way.”

Something that Chaille Munn with the airport says they are looking to keep during the flights.

“It is so important for us to leave here with a good taste in our mouth because we want everyone to be happy and kind and courteous. We really drive that point home to everyone who works here,” said Munn.

If you find yourself traveling, both the airport and travelers have advice to help those looking to see their loved ones this holiday season.

“TSA recommends if you’re going to fly with gifts to pack it in a bag instead of wrapping it so if something were to be flagged, it can be pulled out easier instead of ruining your beautiful wrapping,” said Munn.

“Anyone else who is out there getting ready to hit the roads or the airlines, I would say put on a smile so maybe you can meet someone who is happy and will have a smile too,” said Kennedy.
