As is the case for all major holidays, the Alabama Department of Transportation is expecting more drivers on the road for the upcoming Fourth of July holiday weekend. That’s why the department is encouraging travelers to prioritize their safety over speed.

ALDOT is halting temporary lane closures on Alabama’s interstates between Wednesday, July 3, and Sunday, July 7.

If you wanna stay safe on the roads, ALDOT recommends:

  • Plan ahead
  • Allow for extra travel time
  • If you’re driving, avoid distractions
  • Buckle up
  • Don’t speed
  • Don’t drive impaired

Don’t forget Alabama has a hands-free law, meaning drivers can’t hold their cellphone while driving. If you can’t wait to mess with your phone, pull over to a safe location and park first. Check out the new rules and what it means if you break them right here.

The best defense against serious injury in the event of a crash is buckling up, so always ensure everyone in the vehicle is wearing a seat belt or using appropriate booster or car seats. If you need tips on car seat safety, you can find excellent advice from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration right here.

ALDOT offers a travel app and website featuring road condition information and live traffic camera feeds. You can visit the website on any device right here.
