Traveling in hurricane season

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) – Hurricane season isn‘t over, and it‘s been a busy second half in the Atlantic. If you have plans to travel, it’s best to think ahead.

We talked with a travel expert about ways to protect yourself and your money.

Fox World Travel would never tell you not to travel but says it’s important to be prepared.

Business relationship director Rose Gray says first and foremost, make sure you have proper hurricane coverage in your insurance for every trip you book, especially if it includes a hotel and rental card, and probably flights as well,

She says it‘s often one of the last things we talk about in the booking process. Gray says it‘s really important to download the airline’s app to your phone for updates and travel changes instead of waiting in line for hours or on the phone trying to get answers.

If you‘re at your destination and there’s a storm, listen to the experts.

“Listen to them when they‘re telling you ’We‘re all going to go from the outer rooms to the ballroom’ and ‘We’re going to put mattresses up against the windows’ and ‘We’re going to fill up our bathtubs in case we need water,‘” Gray advised.

Gray says it’s important to know a storm must be a named hurricane in order to qualify for hurricane insurance coverage.

It’s best if you plan to travel this time of year, or even around Thanksgiving, to think about the possibility your plans may change.

Getting the travel insurance, knowing what it covers, and knowing any cancellation policies are really important.
