Trey McKenney, Mileena Cotter named Detroit High School Sports Awards Athletes of the Year

Orchard Lake St. Mary’s Preparatory’s Trey McKenney and Salem’s Mileena Cotter were named the Boys and Girls Athletes of the Year Tuesday night at the 2024 Detroit High School Sports Awards, presented by Detroit Area Honda Dealers. The show was produced in partnership with the U.S. Army.

The show was held at the The Fillmore and honored more than 300 student-athletes from the Detroit Metro area and the surrounding counties.

The other finalists for Boys Athlete of the Year were Novi Detroit Catholic Central’s Darius Marines and Southfield A&T’s Isaiah Marshall.

The Girls Athlete of the Year finalists were Stella Chapman of Ann Arbor Pioneer and Lauren Timpf of Macomb Lutheran North.

McKenney could go to a prep school. He could take his talents outside of Michigan. But the 5-star recruit isn’t. His goals? Graduating from Orchard Lake St. Mary’s and getting another championship.

And if he keeps up what he did this year, maybe a Mr. Basketball title.

If McKenney wants to have a bigger and better senior year, his own numbers are going to be hard to beat. McKenney, who won the Boys Basketball Player of the Year earlier in the evening, averaged a double-double of 22 points and 10 rebounds this year while also dishing 2.5 assists.

He’s ranked first in the state, second nationally at small forward and 14th overall. He has 36 offers on the table and everyone will be on the look to see where he chooses to play his college ball.

When you first look at Cotter’s stats from this year, you have to blink a few times because you think your mind is playing tricks on you.

It isn’t. That’s because Cotter is going to go down as the most decorated lacrosse player in Michigan high school history.

She scored 215 goals this season, which beat the previous single-season record by 43. She’s listed as number one, three, four, and five on the state’s single season game performance list. She’s also number one all-time in scoring.

It’s why she was named the Girls Lacrosse Player of the Year earlier in the night.

She finished her four-year prep career with 472 goals in 49 games – about half the number of contests it took the previous record holder to do it. And yes, that’s another state record.

A 5-star recruit, Cotter will play collegiately at Syracuse.
