Tropical weather and entertainment don’t mix, but we’ve got options for a rainy weekend

Tropical weather has never been a great match with arts and entertainment. Sometimes the show(s) simply can’t, and probably shouldn’t, go on.

I can’t tell you how many stories and even entire entertainment sections I’ve worked on over the years that have been rendered moot or simply scrapped altogether because of one storm or another.

And while I’m writing this on Wednesday afternoon as the rains from Tropical Storm Debby have begun to intensify, here’s hoping that we get off relatively easy and don’t have too much flooding, damage, or entertainment lost to the storm.

Let’s take a peek at the weekend, such as it is.

Weekend weather outlook

Debby will be out of here by Friday morning, but we’re still looking at a rainy weekend in her wake. There’s about a 75% chance of scattered storms on Friday, with a more than 50% chance on both Saturday and Sunday.

Go | See | Do

Again, Friday is kind of a wash, with several events having been canceled or postponed. But there’s still quite a bit going on in the Wilmington area this weekend, with perhaps indoor events your best bets given the ongoing rainy weather.

For starters, the Vivace festival of classical music continues at CFCC’s Wilson Center with concerts on Friday and Saturday, and the Dead Crow Comedy Room is most assuredly staying open for touring stand-up Vic DiBitetto. Hermit Fest celebrating the late Robert E. Harrill, aka the Fort Fisher Hermit, appears to still be a go, and a show by Durham indie singer Skylar Gudasz at the Ocean Grill & Tiki Bar has been pushed from Thursday to Saturday, Aug. 10.

And let’s keep our fingers crossed for Train at Live Oak Bank Pavilion and Maren Morris at Greenfield Lake Amphitheater on Sunday.

The Dish with Port City Foodies

Food and dining writer Allison Ballard has a look at 17 recent restaurant openings and closings in the area, and she checks in with a local chef who’s performing on a Food Network show.

Getting to know Exercise

Next month’s Hopscotch Music Festival, which runs Sept. 5-7 in Raleigh, is one of the state’s biggest. The only Wilmington band playing Hopscotch is the post-punk trio Exercise (although at least two other acts, Tercel and Madisinn, are playing day parties for the fest), so we sat down with singer, songwriter and guitarist Matt Wilkins to see what his band is all about.

News you can use

This week it’s been all Debby all the time, so there are a few stories you might’ve (understandably) missed.

For starters, U.S. Sen. Thom Tillis was in town Tuesday to talk about the opioid crisis, and we were there. Plus, a local group weighs in on what type of bridge they DON’T want to replace the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge, and a new airline is bringing nonstop flights to ILM International.
