Tucson-area business going to new heights in new year
TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) – From just the paint on the outside of their cafe on wheels … Espressoul Café’s message rings clear.
“Espressoul is about community connection and delicious flavors,” said founder Eris Movahedi.
For three years, Espressoul Café has been introducing people to Persian flavors in the Sonoran desert. Now, that paint and message will find its way to the inside of these walls at their first brick-and-mortar location on North Wilmot Road.
“I’m going to be the first Persian woman-owned café in Tucson, which I’m very proud of and proud of being celebrated in Tucson,” Movahedi said.
This was something the couple wouldn’t have dreamed of when they started their business three years ago.
“It was hard to imagine and it’s been a lot of challenges along the way,” co-founder Derek South said, “but we’ve had a lot of support from the community and it’s been beautiful.”
Small businesses like Espressoul Café are what keep the local economy booming, according to the Tucson Metro Chamber.
“It’s our culture that makes us unique,” Tucson Metro Chamber President and CEO Michael Guymon said. “We actually have people coming here because of the food scene – because of our city of gastronomy designation, because of all the great chefs and the great food that we have in this region, and the more diverse it is the better off it is.”
They said it’s a good time for those who have a dream of starting a business to make those leaps.
“We’re seeing a lot of great growth in this region from a variety of different retail and small business standpoints,” Guymon said.
Despite the difficulties that may come from taking the risks, the reward can be oh-so-sweet.
“I want women to feel empowered to just throw themselves into something they’re passionate about and not be afraid and have faith and of course, Persian immigrant women. Women like me,” Movahedi said.
