Tyla pays homage to Aaliyah in stunning vintage Roberto Cavalli gown
Make no mistake, Tyla is one of the biggest style stars out there rn.
Thanks to stylists Lee Trigg and Katie Qian, the pop star is always serving some serious fashion inspo and pushing the boundaries of red carpet dressing.
Need a reminder? Top of the list is obvi the time she collectively gagged everyone in the fashion industry by turning up to the 2024 Met Gala wearing a sculptural strapless dress by Balmain that *literally* seemed to be made from sand, accessorised with an hour glass (an ingenuous interpretation of “The Garden of Time” dress code, we must say).
Other highlights have included a neon yellow 2024 VMAs dress that was made from minuscule strips of fabric and a skirt made from bras that served as a Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show after party look.
Yep, this girl knows how to keep us on our toes! Which is why we were particularly intrigued to see what she would wear to the 2024 MTV EMAs — especially after we clocked that host Rita Ora was wearing a dress that was coooooovered in strawberry blonde faux fur.
Naturally, Tyla did not disappoint!
Much like Maya Jama, who stunned on the EMAs red carpet in a vintage Versace ensemble, Tyla turned to the archives and rocked a vintage Robert Cavalli dress in turquoise zebra print, which featured a huuuuge side split that was trimmed with fur.
She accessorised the look with a pair of stunning, knee-high stiletto sandals by Paris Texas and silver jewellery.
The best bit about this dress? It pays homage to Black female music trailblazers of the late 90s and early 2000s.
This specific dress was previously worn by Eve, who rocked the same dress while attending the 2000 Soul Train Lady of Soul Awards.
Famously, the late Aaliyah also wore a version of this dress in yellow at the 2000 MTV VMAs, where she won Best Female Music Video of the Year.
The event, taking place in September 2000, occurred just under a year before her tragic death in August 2021. She was aged just 22 when she passed away — the same age that Tyla is now.
Another reminder of just how powerful fashion can be.
