U.S. issues travel advisory to popular European spot due to terrorism

The U.S. State Department warned U.S. citizens to “exercise increased caution” when traveling to Italy due to the potential for terrorism.

The travel advisory comes at the end of the country’s peak tourism season.

“Terrorist attacks are possible in Italy. Terrorists may attack with little or no warning,” the Level 2 travel advisory reads. “They may target tourist spots, transport hubs, markets/shopping malls, local government facilities, hotels, clubs, restaurants, places of religious importance, parks, major sporting and cultural events, schools, airports, and other public areas.”

Summer is high tourist season in Italy, with most travelers to the country deciding to visit in the months of June through August, according to Travel Journal.

But according to travel writer Rick Steves, the tourist crowds often choose September and October to visit the area, as well.

The State Department recommends doing the following if you plan on visiting Italy:

• Be aware of surroundings when traveling to tourist locations and crowded public spaces
• Listen to local authorities.
• Keep an eye on local media for breaking events and be ready to adjust plans based on new information.
• Review the Country Security Report for Italy.
• Visit the CDC page for the latest Travel Health Information related to your travel.
• Prepare a contingency plan for emergency situations based on the Traveler’s Checklist.
