Ukraine to participate in 2025 World Expo in Osaka: governor

Osaka Gov. Hirofumi Yoshimura said Tuesday that Ukraine, which has been under invasion by Russia since February 2022, will participate in the 2025 World Expo in the prefecture.

Yoshimura’s remarks come amid concerns that Ukraine may face difficulties in allocating funds for the international event, as the country is burdened by the financial strain of the war with Russia.

“Ukraine is currently in a very difficult situation, but its attendance is meaningful as it serves as an appeal for peace,” Yoshimura told reporters during a visit to France. In November 2023, Russia announced that it would withdraw from the expo.

Sources familiar with the matter said Ukraine believes that it can reduce the burden of exhibiting by using a building provided by the Japan Association for the International Exposition, rather than constructing its own facility.

A Japanese government source said Ukraine is considering taking part in the “Type C” pavilion, which will be built by the organizer and shared among participants, adding the nation is expected to complete its preparations in time for the opening in April next year.
