UPDATED: See closures, alerts and updates for Monroe County amid snowstorm

Monroe County is under a travel watch and winter storm warning due to Sunday’s snowfall. Schools and county government offices will be closed Monday.

The county was previously under a travel advisory.

A travel watch means conditions are threatening to public safety, according to the Indiana Department of Homeland Security. Only essential travel is recommended, and businesses, government agencies and other organizations should implement their emergency action plans.

A winter storm warning is in effect for Monroe County and much of south central Indiana until 7 p.m. Monday, according to the National Weather Service. Snow and sleet accumulations between 6 and 11 inches are expected, as well as wind gusts up to 35 miles per hour.

Roads will likely be slick, according to the NWS, and high winds and snow could knock down tree limbs and power lines. Sporadic power outages are also possible.

If residents must travel, the NWS recommends bringing an extra flashlight, food, water, warm clothing and winter storm kit items like tire chains and booster cables.

UPDATE: This story was updated with the most recent Monroe County travel advisory and information about closures.
