The No. 1-ranked U.S. Women’s National Team suffered a 6-1 loss to No. 2 Japan in the WBSC World Cup gold medal game on Saturday in Castions di Strada, Italy.
The loss snapped Team USA’s streak of three straight WBSC World Cup titles. It took home Silver, while Canada won Bronze.
Former OU and OSU pitcher Kelly Maxwell got the start inside the circle. She recorded three strikeouts in two innings and surrendered one earned run.
Team USA took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning thanks to former Florida outfielder Amanda Lorenz, who delivered an RBI single. But Japan scored six unanswered runs to secure the victory.
Maxwell earned an All-World Team selection for her strong play throughout the WBSC World Cup. Former Florida State infielder Jessie Warren also got selected for Team USA.
