Skiing legend Lindsey Vonn returned to the world stage Saturday in St. Moritz, Switzerland at their World Cup, finishing 14th in the super-G race. Fellow Parkite Lauren Macuga finished seventh.
Cornelia Huetter of Austria took home the title. Vonn’s time of 1:16.36 was only 1.18 seconds off the lead and Macuga’s 0.75 seconds off.
As Vonn raced through the finish line, the Swiss fans roared in an atmosphere resembling a European soccer match – flags waving, horns sounding and shouting of support. The legend is still clearly a pivotal figure across the sport and world, and they appreciated getting to take in this pivotal comeback step. Vonn’s last race on this world stage came almost six years ago at the Are, Sweden World Championships.
Vonn, Macuga and the rest of the speed field will strap their skis back on Sunday for a second super-G race. Their results can be followed on the FIS’s page for the St. Moritz Cup. The race can also be watched live or on-demand on Ski and Snowboard Live.
