VOTE: Anderson Air’s Athlete of the Week poll for Oct. 28

Another week packed with big performances from Wilmington-area athletes is in the books.

We start this week’s Anderson Air StarNews Athlete of the Week Poll off with a unique occurrence. For the first time, two athletes will be eligible under one nomination. That’s because two Wilmington athletes claimed a girls tennis individual doubles championship for the first time in program history.

New Hanover’s Sophia Catino and Hanna Davis claimed their stake as the state’s best on Saturday, downing Myers Park’s team 6-1, 6-4 to claim the 4A title. The title is the first for the Wildcats program and the third in New Hanover County since 2008.

Another rare occurrence presented itself last week as West Brunswick, for just the third time since the turn of the century, defeated New Hanover in a shocking upset. Senior running back Javonta Daniels led the charge as he carried the ball 35 times for 171 yards and a touchdown.

Keeping things on the gridiron, Laney’s Joquin Dingle rushed for 252 yards and a score as the Bucs survived a wild 34-31 overtime thriller in Leland Friday.

Finally, in cross country, Topsail’s Owen Reece earned the area’s best overall finish in Saturday’s NCHSAA 4A East Regional championship, placing second out of a field of 163 runners. The junior was just over a second behind Broughton’s Sam Wooten.
