Vote for the Savannah Morning News Fall Sports Athlete of the Week in an open poll

Fall sports are in midseason form as teams and athletes throughout the Greater Savannah area are competing with an eye on making postseason runs.

There are a number of teams that have the potential to do big things this year, with talented stars leading the way. Here are some highlights from the last couple weeks in Fall sports.

And readers have a chance to weigh in and select the Fall Sports Athlete of the Week in an open poll with no restrictions on the voting. The poll will close at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 17.

Maggie Kyriakides, Savannah Christian volleyball

The senior, who has committed to Alabama, helped SCPS avenge a loss to St. Vincent’s as she had seven kills, three blocks and six digs in a two-set sweep of SVA on Sept. 5. Kyriakides leads the Radiers (13-4) with 134 kills on the season.

John Dodson, Benedictine cross-country

The senior won the Frazier-Hite Cross Country Invitational with a time of 16:25.20.

Leah Nyce, Savannah Arts cross-country

The senior won the Frazier-Hite Invitational with a time of 20:21.10.

Gracie LaFleur, Effingham County softball

The junior catcher went 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles and a home run in a 4-2 win over Richmond Hill.

Julia Anastasio, Richmond Hill cross-country

The junior finished fourth in the Carrollton Invitational Championship race with a time of 20:01.42.

Benjamin Hall, Richmond Hill cross-country

The senior was fourth in the Class 4A-6A Race at the Carrollton Invitational with a time of 16:41.43.

Alyssa Martin, South Effingham softball

The sophomore went 2 for 3 with a double and five RBIs in a win over Brunswick.

Ansleigh Giordano, Effingham County softball

The junior threw a complete game, fanning 10 batters, in a 4-2 win over Richmond Hill.

Jillian Austin, Savannah Christian

The junior struck out six and allowed just two hits while going 2 for 3 with a triple and an RBI in a win over St. Vincent’s

Khloe Jesswein, St. Andrew’s volleyball

The freshman is having a breakout season for the Lions (15-1) as she leads the team with 134 kills and 15 blocks.

Talia Johnson, Richmond Hill volleyball

The junior, who recently committed to Coastal Carolina, leads the Wildcats (13-6) with 188 kills on the season.

Torrin Higginbotham, Savannah Arts

The senior leads the Panthers (14-8) with 171 kills on the year.

Kaylyn Gill, St. Vincent’s volleyball

The junior leads SVA (20-3) in kills and aces and is second on the team in digs.
