Wahiawa youth sports team gets much needed donation after devastating fire
HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Just in time for its new season, members of the Wahiawa United Football Club got a much needed donation.
Earlier this month, all of the youth program’s equipment was destroyed in a fire at Wahiawa District park. On Tuesday, the organization received a check for $10,000 presented by the Downtown Athletic Club along with State Senator Donovan Dela Cruz.
The money will be used to replace some of the items that were last.
One of the club’s leaders and coaches is former UH quarterback Bryant Moniz. He says they’ve been getting by as best they could since the fire.
“Right now, we’re kind of putting slippers out instead of cones — just kind of making stuff happen. It’s gonna be a huge help,” he said. “We would have made it happen. We would have found ways to make it happen, but with the help, it just makes it so much better. It makes it so much easier and it elevates the program for sure.”
Donations like these show the community support for such programs.
“It shows that we’re not just out here on our own trying to do it and that other people care about the kids,” Moniz added.
State Sen. Donovan Dela Cruz said, “So we just wanna make sure they can continue their path to success, learn teamwork, be in something productive.”
In addition to the monetary donation, ILWU also donated a shipping container to house the new equipment.
