Wake for Warriors support wounded soldiers with water sports on Lake Harding
LAKE HARDING, Ga. (WTVM) – A non-profit organization hosted a 3-day water sport event to help local wounded veterans.
“Wake for Warriors” is a non-profit organization founded by retired U.S. Marine Corps Dave Deep in 2012. From Friday, Sept. 20 – Sunday, Sep 22, the organization hosted it’s annual water ports event for veterans suffering from PTSD, mental health, physical health, traumatic brain injuries, depression and other conditions. Organizers say this is a therapeutic approach to allow veterans to experience relaxation and the power of water sports.
One veteran provided some advice for those who may be scared or have doubts about participating.
If there is any scardness, have no fear, these coaches are professional and alot of them do it year round. They’re used to working with people that may be scared and what not and one of the mottoes i heard to day was ‘Hey if you’re gonna do it. do it scared’” said Captain Kyle Barnay.
A father/ son grilling duo, by the name of the “Mclemore Boys” provided mouthwatering BBQ for veterans and their families. John Mclemore, says giving back to veterans and their families makes the experience worth wild.
“It is impossible to give back enough to all the families that have served this great country of ours.” said Mclemore.
Details on how to participate in the water activities and or make a donation can be found on the Wake for Warriors website.
