Warsaw Woman Arrested For Allegedly Stealing Electric Shopping Cart From Walmart

Staff Report

Debbie Sue Jefferson

WARSAW — A Warsaw woman was recently arrested for allegedly stealing an electric shopping cart from Walmart.

Debbie Sue Jefferson, 42, 3762 W. Old Road 30 Lot 678, Warsaw, is charged with theft where the value of the property is between $750 and $50,000, a level 6 felony.

On May 19, an employee in the Warsaw Walmart’s asset protection department received a report about Jefferson taking an electric shopping cart from the premises without permission. The shopping cart, valued at $1,325, is for in-store use only.

According to court documents, the employee saw Jefferson on the electric shopping cart almost a quarter of a mile away from the store. Jefferson told the employee she was going to drive the cart part of the way to her residence, unload her groceries, and bring the cart back to the store. When the employee told her she needed to immediately return the cart, Jefferson refused to do so. She then got off the shopping cart and walked away on foot.

An officer found Jefferson, who said she was taking the electric shopping cart to get to her house. Jefferson’s residence is over five miles away from Walmart.

Surveillance footage showed Jefferson driving the electric shopping cart off Walmart’s premises.

Jefferson was booked in the Kosciusko County Jail on July 21.
