Waterloo West beats Ottumwa in dramatic fashion to cash their ticket to the playoffs
OTTUMWA, Iowa (KYOU) –
Of all of the “KYOU Game of the Weeks”, this was by far the most unpredictable game of the season.
The Waterloo West Wahawks (5-3) came to Ottumwa to face the Bulldogs (7-1) to fight for a playoff spot. Whoever won, would head to the playoffs.
The first quarter was all Wahawks as Bulldog QB Matt Mitchell threw 2 INTs. And the Wahawks would lead 14-7.
Bulldogs all-time leading rusher, Koby Chanthalavan, ran in 2 touch downs as well as his one in the first half to make it 21-14, Bulldogs.
When the home fans thought the momentum was on the side of the Dogs. But when the Wahawks were in striking distance of another TD to tie, a strip sack by Bulldogs defense was called an incomplete pass by the referees.
That controversial call led to a touchdown by the Wahawks, tying the game 21-21.
Then the bulldogs marched halfway up the field, but they failed on a 40+ yard FG. Giving the Wahawks a chance to seal the deal.
Which they did with Wahawk QB Brady Dean throwing a monster TD to Deztin McMurrin which would take the game away from the bulldogs 28-21.
