Weather Extra | Air travel delays
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) – Just 10 days until Thanksgiving now and the WSAZ meteorologists are tracking a powerhouse storm that figures to disrupt air travel in the Northeast and Great Lakes region. Tony has a beat on where the delays will be common.
After last week’s rainstorm broke our fall dry spell, the gates are open for a much wetter and stormier end to autumn. Take this week when two powerhouse storms are set to cross the country armed with wind, rain and snow. For those reasons, First Alert Days have been declared to end the week.
Tuesday and Wednesday will start dry and mild (60s before noon ) then afternoon showers will pass with a cold front. The winds will pick up as Wednesday’s showers move through. Those winds will then stay up for 48 hours as a storm parks out near the Great Lakes. While the winds will pose the risk of power flickers, the extent of any outs will hinge on how fast the strongest gusts blow. Those details are still a day or so away from being set in stone.
One major concern with the winds will be airport delays with Chicago (United), American (Charlotte and Dulles in DC) and Atlanta (Delta) all fair game for some disruptions. Those airports feed Yeager and add in Detroit and Pittsburgh (American ) which feed into Tri-State Airport as in the crosshairs for delays Wednesday night through even Saturday.
The carrot for snow lovers comes in the guise of wet snow showers that are likely Thursday night into Saturday morning.
