Weather roadblocks for holiday travel

BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – Hitting the roads or taking to the skies this holiday season? You may encounter a few roadblocks as active weather is anticipated across the country.

Here’s what you need to know ahead of your holiday trip:

Across the State

Texas will be treated to calm and seasonable weather through the weekend. All travel plans should be good to go – at least until Monday.

Christmas travel across Texas – clear and calm(kbtx)

An area of low pressure is set to sink into the panhandle by Monday afternoon, pushing a cold front across the state. Although this front will not do too much to temperatures, it is expected to spark up some showers and storms on Christmas Eve.

It is too early to map out exact timing, but model data indicates that places like Texoma and the DFW Metroplex can expect rain and rumbles as early as Tuesday morning. As the front marches to the south and east, showers and storms will follow suit. The Brazos Valley will likely see activity pick up right around Santa’s arrival. The rain will clear out for Christmas, but rain chances return Thursday morning and stick around through next weekend.

Across the Country

If you are looking for a white Christmas, you will need to leave the Lone Star State. Low pressure is swinging across the northeast, heading for the Atlantic, dropping several inches of both rain and snow in its path over the weekend. More wintry precipitation is expected to fall across the northern plains, stretching from North Dakota down to New Mexico. This could lead to some travel troubles if you are planning to drive or fly up north.

The Pacific Northwest is also expecting some active weather. Washington, Oregon, and Northern California are in for rain, snow, and some blustery winds as we approach Christmas Day. This could cause some delays for flights heading out west early next week.

If your holiday travels take you to the southeast, similar to the state of Texas, you can expect some rain and rumbles on both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Here’s the good news, travel is not expected to be majorly impacted!
