Williamsburg’s Derek Weisskopf and Panorama’s Jaidyn Sellers were named the Boys and Girls Athlete of the Year, respectively, Monday night at the Iowa High School Sports Awards, presented by SCHEELS.

The event was held at Hoyt-Sherman place in Des Moines and honored more than 250 Iowa student-athletes.

SCHEELS also sponsored the Boys and Girls Athlete of the Year awards.

The other finalists for the Boys Athlete of the Year were Brevin Doll of ADM and Dreshaun Ross of Fort Dodge.

The other finalists for the Girls Athlete of the Year were Addison Dorenkamp of Valley and Payton Petersen of Dike-New Hartford.

Weisskopf was one of the best to suit up on the football field this past year in the state—and his talents will be taken to the next level.

A nominee earlier in the night for Football Player of the Year, Weisskopf’s list of accolades were long. They include ADIDAS All-American; Class 3A All-State Captain and First Team; District MVP; an invitation to the Shrine Bowl; and Des Moines Register Elite Team. He also garnered numerous all-state honors throughout his career.

A multisport athlete, Weisskopf showed out on the basketball court, earning all-conference honors as well as honorable mention all-state.

In the spring, Weisskopf showed his talents in track and field. He was a state qualifier in the high jump, shot put, and discus, where he earned a silver medal.

A four-star recruit, Weisskopf will be suiting up for Iowa next year.

It’s hard to find a sport that Sellers didn’t excel in during her high school career.

A nominee tonight for the Girls Track and Field Athlete of the Year, the Panorama senior was the state’s fastest sprinter, regardless of class this season. She came away with the Class 1A state titles in the 100, 200, and 400. She also took third in the high jump. She won a total of 10 state titles and three Drake Relay Titles in her career.

In the winter she shined on the basketball court, being named to the Class 2A first team by the Des Moines Register. She led the Panthers to the state championship and scored 20 points in the state final.

And then there’s the sport she’s going to college for—softball. She’s signed to continue her career with Iowa. The outfielder is a first-team all-conference player as well as an all-state honoree.
